Freshmen year can be intimidating for most people with a new school, new classmates, and a new atmosphere, but we’ve all been there. her are some tips to help out the class of 2020
- Focus on your GPA
The most common thing you’ll hear an upperclassmen say is “I wish I focused on school more during my freshman year.” At first, you are going to be very overwhelmed with everything during your first year of high school, but make sure to find a balance for you activities and your schoolwork. This is will be the base of your GPA that you will build on for the next four years.
2. School Spirit
You might think that it’s lame to dress up for pep assemblies and other school events, but what people don’t know is that contributing to school spirit helps to make school that much more enjoyable. Having spirit allows you to have friendly competitions with other grades, and makes high school a place you won’t regret going to everyday.
3. Expand Your Horizons
There are going to be so many more opportunities for you now than there were before. In Niles West there is literally a club for everyone, you are guaranteed to find one that you like. For example, if you are into theatre, athletics, academics, or anything in between you are sure to find something for you. You may be too shy to go to homecoming, but trust me it’s something you are going to want to experience. Homecoming is way more exciting than it seems. There is a king and queen elected by the whole student body, and you are lucky enough to participate in it, which means you have a purpose to the school.
4. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Help
Niles West provides many places that you can go to for help during the school year. Freshman year you might be struggling with your new atmosphere and level of difficulty, and you probably won’t wanna ask for help to show a sign of weakness, but that is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. Do you really wanna risk your grades and your overall GPA, just because you were afraid to speak up and ask for guidance? At every corner of the school, there will be someone there to guide you. The LIT Center will be your key to success for freshman year.
5. Have Fun!
High school is going to go by way faster than you might think. These are going to be the best 4 years of your life. You need to make them count and go out and make memories and be as friendly as possible with everyone. If you set your mentality to be positive, you’re gonna want to come to school everyday.
Movies make out high school to be some sort of dangerous place where you are forced to spend four years of your life, but in reality it is a fun and exciting place where you get to make new friends and try new things.
