Homecoming week has finally arrived, which means the annual float building contest is here. The float building contest will take place this Thursday, Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the field house.

The annual float building contest is a contest in which West’s clubs and cabinets make floats for the homecoming parade. Out of all the floats that are made, the three best are chosen, and they receive money that go towards their activity accounts. Although money is a good incentive, the float building means a lot more to staff and students.

“In my vision, the purpose of float building is to show Skokie residents a part of Niles West and what they have to offer. They can see how hard NW students work,” junior cabinet member Leanza Diaz said.

This float building contest is not only a fun and school-spirited event, but a competitive one between clubs, and especially class cabinets.

“It is fun to compete against the other grades and show off your school spirit. I hope we beat the other cabinet’s this year, because in the past years’ float building we have struggled, but this year we are ready to dominate,” junior cabinet member Eliana Bender said.

Members of different clubs and cabinets throughout the school have high hopes for their floats this year.

“Last year was my first year helping to build a float. From my cabinet, I expect it to be one of the best floats we have ever built. We are working hard this year to go all out for homecoming week. Last year’s float building, we tried our best to go all out and make it look amazing, but it is harder than it looks,” Diaz said.

Niles West and the Skokie community are eagerly anticipating the homecoming parade this Friday, October 6 at 1:20 p.m. and can’t wait to see what West’s creative minds will do with this year’s theme of Glitter & Gold.
