The moody and dark teenage TV shows have returned on the CW in full swing for the fall premieres. The angst is high as The Vampire Diaries returns for it’s third season and a new show, The Secret Circle has high expectations to live up to and it doesn’t disappoint.
The Vampire Diaries left off with a major cliffhanger in May, when the hunky vampire Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) left with the arch-enemy Klaus to save his vampire brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder.) Throw in a viscous love triangle between the vampires, who are over 160 years old, with their ex-girlfriend’s crazy doppelganger and Stefan’s current girlfriend, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev from Degrassi). Add in a few werewolves and a couple of witches and you’ve got yourself a full blown supernatural thriller.
Since The Vampire Diaries is already a 3 cycle show and you feel out of the loop being so far behind, luckily for you the CW has come out with a new show from the makers and creators of The Vampire Diaries that will leave you spellbound. The Secret Circle debuted Thursday, Sept. 15 after the premiere of TVD. What has the appearance of an overworked idea of teenage witches has come out the gate blowing away my preconceived notions. We have seen Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Charmed, but now the CW has mixed things up.
Cassie Blake, played by Britt Robertson from Life Unexpected and Avalon High, is a normal teenage girl whose single mother is killed in an “accidental” fire. After being sent to live with her grandmother, whom she vaguely knows, she uncovers the secrets of her past. The secrets that will forever change her life. Distant relatives from witches that escaped the Salem Witchcraft Trials of 1692, Cassie and five others teenagers from her town form a complete circle of full-blooded witches. A full and secretive circle means total and powerful magic and with Cassie in town, they make the ultimate team.
I have been a fan from The Vampire Diaries from the very beginning in September of 2009. I am a Twilight-aholic and I thought the show would be committing treason against the Cullens. The show based on the book by L.J Smith has an identity all on it’s own and I highly recommend you rent the season 1 & 2 on DVD and catch yourself up. As for The Secret Circle, I think it has the perfect mixture of magic, mystery, romance and drama. That sounds like the perfect hit. Make sure to set your DVRs and circle Thursdays on your calender for the hit shows on the CW. Vampire Diaries airs at 7 and The Secret Circle airs at 8.
