Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful and to give to those in need. It’s also a time to spend with family, loved ones, and the people who will always be there to support you. Celebrations were smaller this year, however, because many people celebrated the holiday in their own homes due to an increase in Covid-19 cases. Nonetheless, students at Niles West enjoyed a meal with immediate family and close friends as they recounted what they were thankful for this year.

“Over Thanksgiving break this year, I will be spending time with my parents and my older brother,” sophomore Caitrona Hermer said. “I’m thankful that I haven’t gotten Covid and that no one in my family has. I’m also grateful that I have a roof over my head and food during these difficult times.”

Thanksgiving break for some is also finding the best deals during Black Friday.

“I plan to enjoy this holiday with my family because everyone is going to be at home. I will also probably be up all night trying to get a PlayStation 5,” junior Rabee Ahmad said. “This year, I’m thankful for my family, health, and keeping my sanity while in AP Physics.”

Not all Niles West Students are celebrating Thanksgiving break in the states this year.

“Over Thanksgiving break, I will be going to Mexico. My mom bought the tickets about a month ago, but there was some hesitation on whether or not we should still go with Covid cases rising, but we ultimately decided to go. Of course, we will be keeping all the safety precautions like wearing a mask and social distancing,” senior Julia Panait said. “I am thankful for my friends and family, especially during these times when I can feel so lonely. I’m glad I have a support system.”

There are many ways Niles West students are celebrating during Thanksgiving break, spending time with family, going Black Friday shopping, or even traveling. However, all have one thing in common, no matter where they are, they all understand the importance of being thankful.
