The girl football players are now scheduled to play their annual Powderpuff game against each other on Friday, Oct. 21 at 2:30 pm in the football stadium.

The game was originally scheduled for tonight at 6; however it has been moved to Friday due to bad weather.

Powderpuff is a flag football team made up of only girls.  Traditionally, there is only one game per year, and the game consists of the ladies in two different teams playing against each other. The freshmen and the seniors play against the sophomores and the juniors.  The Powderpuff game is always during Homecoming week and is a part of the Homecoming celebrations.

“It is a way for our ladies to get together for one week and really just have fun in the stadium!  It’s what Homecoming week is all about: school spirit, a little healthy competition, and good clean sports”woman”ship,” said student activities director, Jessica Ogulnik, who is also responsible for organizing the teams and ordering the jerseys.

Social studies teacher and youth football program coach Daniel Kosiba  is coaching the defense of Powderpuff this year and mentioned how he loves coaching the girls because of how enthusiastic they are. He was very surprised at how many of the girls had shown up for practice, and is proud of how the girls work during practice.

“The girls work hard, a lot of them stay after practice to run plays, and are a lot of fun to coach. The players make the most of it… and we do our best to prepare for the big game and try to have a lot of fun along the way,” he said.

Powderpuff allows the girls who like to play football to play football as well as spend time with friends, which is one of the main reasons some girls decided to join the team.

“I always wanted to play football and I though it was cool that there was a girls football team at West so I decided to give it a try, and most of my friends were joining so I joined too,” said sophomore Tanya Polhovski.

Along with Kosiba, English teacher Paul Bellwoar, science teacher John Metzler and Nicole Maggard of student services also coach the Powderpuff girls.
