Nothing New In Soldier Field

Nothing New In Soldier Field

After high hopes this off-season, the Chicago Fire FC failed to come out with a win in their first four matches of the season. Finishing 11th in the Eastern Conference last year, the Fire set their hopes on improving. But after losses to Philadelphia Union, Atlanta United, New York Red Bulls, and a tie with the New England Revolution the Fire sit at 13th in the table.

With 2nd year head coach Raphaël Wicky leading the team to a zero win start in the first four games, adjustments are needed as a new era of Fire soccer was made. The new badge, the move to Soldier Field, and the new kits were just a few of the many things that this organization has changed since Wicky took over, but the postseason hopes have not changed.

There has been a glimpse of a bright future at the Fire with midfielder, Luka Stojanovic lighting up Soldier Field at their home opener against the Revolution with a goal early in the first half. After coming back from an MCL injury, Stojanovic shows his production this season with 2 goals and an assist after the first four games.

Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has let in nine goals this season in the four games played making the Fire tied for the second most goals against in all of the MLS. With the expected return of goalkeeper Kenneth Kronholm, the Fire hope that stats will change sooner or later. We have yet to see any minutes played by the club’s youngest signing, Gabriel Slonia, who signed with the Fire at the age of 14 back in 2019. Slonia is expected to be a long term option for the Fire as both Kronholm and Shuttleworth get older.

After recording 12 goals last season, Robert Beric starts off the season with a goal and an assist only. The Fire are in need of more production from Beric if they have any hopes of reaching the playoffs this season.

The Fire hope to climb up the table tonight against DC United, a team who sits two spots ahead of the Fire in the Eastern Conference.
