Adele has always been a singer who brings an immense amount of impact and emotion into her songs. Her new single “Easy On Me” is no exception.

“Easy On Me” is essentially about the end of a marriage and the lessons learned by going through it. Adele is no stranger to themes such as isolation, moving forward, and sorrow β€” this song still is able to find its own voice and stand among her best. It’s quite an emotional song with lyrics such as, “Go easy on me, baby I was still a child didn’t get the chance to feel the world around me I had no time to choose what I chose to do,” creating a detailed narrative about Adele’s situation leading up to her marriage. She didn’t have time to get her barrings in the world as she rose to stardom at a young age and almost felt as if she had to cling to anything she saw as secure.

The song itself also has a great rhythm to it and an extremely memorable chorus. Of course, this is practically a staple of Adele’s music, but this song really does bring its own unique sound to her catalog. While many of her other songs do have a story to tell and pack an emotional punch, this one, in particular, feels put together, and you can feel her personal experiences leap between the lyrics.

The music video which accompanies the song is very strong as well. It has tons of imagery of marriage and emptiness which really intertwine heavily with the themes and narrative of the song. Symbols such as a car with cans attached to the back and champagne glasses permeate the video, as well as empty rooms with no furniture.

Those detailed lyrics which form such an impactful story really do capture the spirit of her other works such as”Someone Like You” and “Hello.” Other reviewers such as Time Magazine and Vogue have also applauded Adele’s single β€” β€œShe is vulnerable and introspective, tender with herself and ultimately at least a little bit hopeful,” writes Eloise Barry.

Adele’s plans for her album seem to be taking similar themes as “Easy On Me” as well. When pressed about her album in a recent interview with her fans on social media, “Divorce, babe, divorce,” is all she said. So, while her future songs are yet to be determined, we can rest easy knowing that they will be as engaging and introspective as always.
