Girls’ gymnastics is winding up their swing into the 2023 season. The girls are ready for this season with high spirits and lots of expectations. Head coach Susan Arcus chose a lot of new members for the team this year, meaning there will be a lot of new potential for the girls. The goals this season are very clear, to get better individually and as a team, to have fun, and make it memorable.

The girls will have to master the four events of gymnastics, beam, vault, bars, and floor. Each has its own difficulties and beauty in itself.

The beam is one of Captin and senior Alina Andrews favorite events, and what she mainly focuses on during practice  “It’s challenging, it takes a lot of strength it’s hard but it’s fun,” Andrews said.

She is also working towards getting better on her floor event, aiming to hit 2 back handsprings by the end of the season.

On the first day of practice, Arcus noticed that the girls vaulting better than average, “The thing that I noticed during practice is that we have a really good vaulting team, yesterday I was really impressed on day one all of the girls made it over [the] vault. There [are] a lot of schools that we compete against that their fresh and soph have none that go over the vault so on day one everybody went over so it was really great,” Arcus said.

Every day after school the gymnastics gym is filled with girls ready to practice. Their captains lead them through their warmups, then the coaches take it from there, mainly focusing on 3 events per practice. It is exciting for Arcus to see how the freshmen and sophomores progress.

I think it’s just the fact of everybody being new like half the team being new it just kind of exciting to get everybody just to find what are strengths are and getting to know everybody and just having all of those first together as a group is kind of fun,” Arcus said.

Though for some of the senior girls it’s sad for this to be their last season, “As a senior it’s hard to believe that this is my last gymnastics season ever. I have been doing gymnastics since I was 6 years old so it most definitely will be weird knowing my gymnastics career will be over soon.” Garcia said.

Join and cheer on the girls for their first home meet against the Glenbrook South Titans, Thursday, December 9th.
