Opinion: School Food Prices are Outrageous!
Feb 15, 2023
Every day students stumble into the Niles West cafeteria during their lunch periods hungry and ready to eat. However, the prices of these foods are outrageous and cause plenty of students to plunge into debt. Is the school lunch even worth going into debt for?
In my opinion; as a student who gets lunch pretty often, and is in debt probably every day; the food is not to die for. I’ll be honest some days the food is quite good but some days it’s a disaster, it is really just a hit or miss. I know there is a simple solution to this, to pack my own lunch; but I happen to become pretty lazy when I have to pack my lunch and would rather take my chances with the school lunch.
See I am not really that mad about how the food tastes, I will avoid what I know will be bad and just get what should be good, however, what makes me mad about this is the pricing!
One slice of pizza in the cafeteria is 3.75, chicken tenders are 3.75; four mozzarella sticks, are 3.75. How can all of these things be 3.75? Like what is that extra 75 cents for, no way I am paying around four dollars for a slice of pizza or for four little cheese sticks.
One of the most outrageous things I have done at lunch though has got to be mistakenly buying a Starbucks coffee. One bottle of coffee is 4.50, it is absurd! I love coffee don’t get me wrong, but I pay less at Dunkin for a coffee, so why would I spend more for the cafeterias coffee?
Okay, I am done complaining about this, though it still gets on my nerves, I have come up with a couple of solutions to this problem our cafeteria is having.
One way is if we cut off all the extra cents we have to pay like 3.75 make it just 3 bucks, the cents really add up in the long run so if we cut that out it would be pretty useful. Why do we need to pay that extra couple of cents anyways?
My best solution to this though is that every student gets at least one free thing a day, I don’t think everything should be free because then the quality will surely go down. However, if students get one thing free they don’t have to worry about being in debt unless they want more than one thing, and then students like me can not complain about it.
These are definitely some flaws our school needs to fix, and they should listen to these solutions because I believe they could work for the bettering of Niles West. I will keep eating school lunch but I will not be satisfied with it unless changes are made!
