Niles West’s VPE Star: Sophia Gomez

With several opportunities to become involved here at Niles West, students are able to find their true passion. For junior Sophia Gomez, this task came with ease.

Gomez is on the varsity track team. Being on a varsity team, Gomez is also taking the Varsity Physical Education (VPE) class. Gomez was recognized as “Leader of the Pack” by the Physical Welfare Department, an award that has been around for years now. Being “Leader of the Pack” is an important part of gym classes here at Niles West. Students who receive the recognition show dedication and hard work in their classes. 

“A couple weeks into the semester [Gomez] earned the “Leader of the Pack” award which we like to give to students that are leading by example and might not be the most vocal or the most animated people, but they definitely get the job done and the work done and are an example for the rest of the class to perform like they are performing,” Physical Welfare Director Joseph Collins said. 

Collins is also Gomez’s teacher and commented on her commitment to the class. “She is always super focused and dedicated and determined to finish the workouts and perform them at a high level. She is doing a great job and she is a pleasure to have in class,” Collins said. 

“Being recognized as “Leader of the Pack” is definitely a sign of stepping [in] the right direction of my journey being in that class. Even with being new to the class, I was able to learn new things pretty quickly. Being supported and [being] able to push others is mentally rewarding. It is a class that teaches students that being selfish at times is acceptable; it pushes you to achieve that goal. It disciplines you physically and mentally,” Gomez said. 

Gomez’s friend commented on her character as well. “I’ve known Sophia since middle school. She is one of the most honest and sweetest people you will meet. She is always the person I go to when I need someone the most. She is a hard worker and has always been determined to reach her goals.” junior Elizabeth Szwiec said. Gomez values hard work and discipline and is a great example of a student-athlete here at West. 

Student-athletes make up a large part of the foundation of Niles West, and Gomez is a great example of a well-rounded student that takes pride in everything she does.
