2011 Girls Gymnastics Preview

[media id=147]
The NWN had the opportunity to sit down with Girls Gymnastics head coach Susan Arcus to talk about the upcoming season.
NWN: How does the team look this year?

Arcus: Our varsity team looks great this year.  We should do pretty well this year with seniors Jenny Marin, Kelly Sanks, Susan McNichols, Jessica Sutfin; junior Nicholle Fourkas; sophomore Valerie Fung; and freshman Catherine Steegmueller.

NWN: What are the teams’ goals this season?

Arcus: Our varsity team has set a goal of having each score we receive on beam and bars being over an 8.0 and at least three scores on vault and floor over an 8.8.  With that, we should be able to win Conference.

NWN: Who are the key contributors on the team this year?

Arcus: Marin should be our top scorer on beam and vault.  Also, Steegmueller should be our top score on bars and floor.  Marin, Steegmueller, Fung, and Sanks should also do great for us, as they compete in all four events (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise).

NWN: What are the teams’ strengths and weaknesses?

Arcus: Our strength is our determination to succeed.  We believe that we have the skills to take the title.  Also, we have tremendous depth on our team.  Each girl has the ability to be on each event and we are determined to put up the best line up each meet.  That being said, I’m not seeing a clear weakness on our team, at this point.
NWN: How do you anticipate the team will do in the long run?  What’s the current outlook on the postseason?

Arcus: Last year we had three gymnasts make it into the Sectional meet.  This year we would like to see Marin in the all-around (competing in all four events); Steegmueller in the all-around as well as on floor, bars, and beam; Fung in the all-around and on floor; Sanks in the all-around and on vault.  If we accomplish all of this, we should be looking forward to having a great year.

The Girls compete next against Glenbrook North at home on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 5:30
