Opinion: Summer Is the Best Season

Apr 19, 2023

Because of the high 70s during PSAT and SAT week, now that there is snow that suddenly appeared earlier this week, it made me miss the hot weather. This is what you get for living in Chicago, the bipolar weather really gets you. Although, I do love how Chicago has all four seasons, winter, spring, fall and summer. Summer is the best.

I think I am a little biased because my birthday is in the summer, but the majority of my friends agree that summer is better than winter. Especially because during summer you get to hang out with your friends almost every day. Now that my friends and I are starting to get our licenses, it is going to make the summer feel so free.

During summer there are so many fun activities to do, such as going to the beach, getting ice cream all the time, shopping, picnics or even just driving around with the windows down blasting music. Also, there is the Fourth of July when you go with family or friends to watch fireworks. You sit there and just talk for hours while pretty bright lights flash around.

There are so many better foods for summer. You get to grill hot dogs and hamburgers with friends or family and watermelon is a huge summer food that is so nutritious and refreshing. Popsicles and lemonade cannot be forgotten. Imagine just sitting out tanning in your backyard having a cold drink next to you while you eat a popsicle, wow the dream!

My best memories are during summer. One that comes to mind is going to the beach during my cousin’s 13th birthday where there were huge waves. We almost drowned but it was definitely the best time.

You get a fresh start with a new school year and your grades reset. The reset gets you motivated to start off the school year with good grades. You can also look back at your grades last school year and try to change them for the better. During winter break, all you get is a new semester and you have to stay with teachers you don’t like. After summer you get new teachers and all your homework off the bat is easy homework points.

If you really think about it, for winter all you get is winter break, which is a measly two weeks off. I do get it though that during those two weeks you get to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s, I rather have three months off of school like what you get during summer break. Also, who really wants to go to school? During summer break you get time to rest and not think about homework. During winter break you still have to make sure you finish all your homework before the end of the two weeks.

The freezing weather makes me want to never leave the house. Because of the gloomy days and frigid temperatures, seasonal depression really hits hard during winter. That is why everyone leaves during winter break to go somewhere hot and tropical to get some sun and feel happy again. I rarely hear people go somewhere cold during the summer.

I like winter, but the cons outway the pros compared to summer.
