Varsity girls soccer played their last conference game of the season against Evanston on Tuesday, May 2. Unfortunately, the Wolves could not take home the win with a final score of 5-0.

Though it was a tough loss for the team, the players reflect on the game and always seek improvement.

“Our last conference game was successful even though we did lose. We learned throughout all of conference how to play better together even when we are playing against hard teams. It was a really great game to learn from in a sense that we were able to figure out what we needed to do better which leads us to some bigger wins,” captain and senior Maja Applequist said.

For new players on the team, especially underclassmen, it was harder to get used to playing at a varsity level. Freshman Mikayla Saunders expresses the challenges she faced this season as an underclassman on the team.

“It was hard to get used to playing with older girls for me because they are faster and bigger unlike me and some and the other freshmen on the team. I felt there was some pressure on me during some games because I am the goalie and it can all count on me during some games,” Saunders said.

As the season comes to an end, the Wolves are working harder than ever at their practices. When they don’t have games, they practice until dark in order to prepare for game time on the field.

“This season I learned that things get so much easier with experience. At first, I was scared to play on varsity, but after many games and practices, I have started to feel more comfortable on and off the field,” freshman Linnea Applequist said.

Throughout this season, the wolves have had some ups and downs. Some weeks they would be dominating their opponents, and on others, it could go the other way around. The wolves have made a strong bond, making their playing on the field stronger than ever. Along with this, the players feel that they have immensely improved throughout the season.

“I think I really improved on my technique over this season. I’ve been working really hard trying to get better everyday. Even if it was the smallest things that improved, I feel they still have a big outcome when it comes to my playing,” Saunders said.
