Girls Soccer Celebrates Their Seniors and An Upcoming New School Record
May 15, 2023
The girls soccer team celebrated Senior Night for their eight seniors on May 9 in the stadium. After playing against the Maine East Blue Demons, they are getting closer to breaking the school record of wins in a single season, making this game their twelfth win of this year. The seniors played hard and had a big part in making goals and assists throughout the game.
Senior nights are moments when the upperclassmen get to relax and let the underclassmen plan the night for them. The team’s freshmen, sophomores and juniors collaborated to make the night memorable.
“The best part about senior night was decorating because it’s a time where the underclassmen can do something nice for the seniors and bond together. I’m super proud of the seniors who’ve played for four years in the program. Their dynamic with each other is key to our success,” junior Delaney Gin said.
From beating our school rival, Niles North, to winning the Body Armour tournament, the team has had a great season this past spring, especially for this year’s graduating seniors. Although a bittersweet moment, the team couldn’t be any prouder of each other.
“I’ve played with the other seniors for all four years and we’ve become so close. It feels good to have ended my last year at Niles West with our best season yet. I’m so proud of everyone,” senior Jillian Rudin said.
To prepare, practices consist of passing and shooting drills, tactical work and situational work. They work hard on and off the field, which is reflected during games.
“There are no shortcuts to success, and without the commitment and dedication from the girls to put in the work each and every day, we wouldn’t be in the position we’re at this point of the season,” coach Bill Papaioannou said.
As the team advances in the season, they will start the state series this week on Tuesday, May 16 at Loyola Academy. They are driven and hungry for success.
“We are excited to win [our game] Wednesday to not only tie the school record but also advance to the regional finals. I believe in us to make it happen and when it does happen I know it will be a huge milestone for everyone on the team and will show the hard work all of us have put into this season,” senior caption Megan Gartner said.
Thank you, seniors, for all your hard work these last four years, and best of luck to the girls soccer team at regionals! Come watch them play and support the team this Wednesday!
