With my final year of high school quickly coming to an end, I have spent a lot of time in different parts of the building. Whether it be sitting in the library doing homework or in the cafeteria eating lunch with friends, I have come to the realization that I would rather spend my time in the RPC.
The idea of spending time in a room where you cannot be on your phone or talk to anyone might not sound appealing to anyone, but I have found it to be somewhere I’m kind of excited to go to. Yes, it’s annoying checking my student campus to see I have 42 minutes of detention, but once I’m in the room I don’t want the period to end.
The room is filled with books, fidget toys, coloring books, snacks and music quietly playing in the back. While you aren’t allowed to talk, it’s somewhere you can go to not only cut down your detention hours but also relax. Being a senior, I have been in the RPC countless times, and I feel like I get more work done in there than just a regular study hall. In comparison, study halls can be loud, but the RPC is quiet and there are little-to-no distractions, giving you the time and space to complete tasks.

In a normal study hall, I’m tempted to leave to walk the halls, stop at the vending machine, or unlock my phone and get distracted by Tik Tok. However, in the RPC you have to put your phone in the caddy; therefore, the only option is to do your work.
The room doesn’t just feel welcoming because of the warm quiet environment, but also because of Kelly Weiland who operates the RPC by keeping track of students’ hours. Not only is she kind and welcoming when you come in, but she helps you come up with a plan to finish your hours and will do the math to figure out the exact day you’ll be done. I always enjoy walking in and being happily greeted by her.
Another advantage of the room is its private bathroom. There aren’t bathrooms close to the RPC, so if the bathroom wasn’t there you’d be walking down to the bathrooms by the cafeteria or by the south lobby. Instead of a long trek, it’s so nice to just walk a few feet to use the bathroom.
If you receive an email that you have a 20 minute detention to serve, don’t get down because you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you enjoy sitting in the RPC.
