The Pop of Color (Emphasis on the Pop)

Junior Alexa Bits on adding a pop of color.

If you know me, or notice my style, it quickly occurs to you that I mainly wear neutrals. Hate would be a strong word, but I really, really, really don’t like to wear much color. Occasionally, I’ll see a pair of greens flats or a red sweater that I like while shopping, but chances are I won’t even consider buying it. However, because I know that I am a rare case, and because I’ve seen the pop of color trend surfacing on blogs and in editorials, I thought I might give it a go.

We’ve all seen the neon trend go horribly wrong, and I would like to make it clear that POC and neon are related but not the same thing.

Now that the introduction is over, it is necessary to define what exactly a POC is: a purple clutch, a green top, or maybe even red pants, if you’re feeling bold. These are the kind of pieces that indicate the “pop.” On style blogs, I’ve seen both men and women dress in a way that overlooks the ever so important first word of the phrase and just skip to color. I’m talking about a bright orange suit (I will not name the famous stylist who wore this ghastly ensemble out of respect), some of the looks from Gucci’s 2011 spring/ summer looks (I’m resisting the urge to rant at the moment), and many more crimes of fashion.

Although there have been many fashion faux pas out there involving this very dicey trend, there have also been many triumphs.

Since the weather outside is resembling spring and because a POC can look so good if done right, I have decided to go on a hunt for the POC trend done right.

These bright red suede pumps worn by junior Emma Zivkovic stand out when paired with simple black leggings.
