10 Best Comedies

10. Roman Holiday – 1953
A romantic comedy, Audrey Hepburn stars in an Oscar winning role as a princess (of a made up country) who sneaks out from her room while in Rome. The newspaper hears that the poor princess is ill in bed, while really she is running around somewhere in the city. A reporter finds the disoriented girl, and manipulates her into giving him a story that would save his job without letting her know that he knows who she is. I love Roman Holiday because it’s sweet and comical and fun to watch, for both boys and girls.

9. The Graduate – 1967
An iconic comedy, Dustin Hoffman plays a college graduate who has an affair with his married neighbor with one of the most famous movie lines, “You’re trying to seduce me, Mrs. Robinson. Aren’t you?”. Trouble is, he falls in love with her daughter who is also about to get married. The basis for many of today’s romantic comedies, The Graduate is simply one of the funniest movies because of all the twisted complications that come with life.

8. Some Like it Hot – 1959
A legendary comedy, Some Like it Hot, follows two men (Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis) who witness the St. Valentines Day Massacre, and they try elude criminals that try to kill them…by dressing up as women. All seems to be going well until they both fall for a hot blond (Marylin Monroe). So now they compete to win her affection while somehow keeping their true identities secret. This movie definitely ranks in the top ten because today’s comedies just don’t live up to this standard anymore.

7. Tootsie – 1982
This comedy shoves acting up to another level. Struggling actor Michael Dorsey is blacklisted by every talent agency in the city, so he tries to prove himself by transforming himself into a woman and land a role on General Hospital. As his alter-ego’s popularity grows, he finds himself falling in love with one of his costars.

6. Monty Python and the Holy Grail – 1975
One of the most quoted spoofs of all time, the British comedy troupe Monty Python retells the classic tale of King Arthur and his Knights of Camelot. A ridiculously humorous movie, if you liked Young Frankenstein, you will love Monty Python. At its core, it’s a good and funny story.

5. Annie Hall – 1977
Regarded by many to be Woody Allen’s masterpiece, Annie Hall is a very adult film, as most of Allen’s are, and even won Best Picture of the Year. Mumbling fool Alvy (Allen) moves in with his girlfriend (Diane Keaton) as they battle spiders in the toilet. Although the themes are pretty grown-up, high school kids will love this funny movie because they can see how little things have changed since the 70’s when it comes to relationships.
4. Dr Strangelove – 1964
Dr Strangelove is one of the craziest movies you can ever see, filled with mad scientists and paranoid military generals, a mish-mosh of ridiculous notions and outbursts of insanity. Film maker Stanley Kubrick has made countless movies that have become legends: The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Odyssey — none of which were comedies! Known as a harbinger of horror, Kubrick tried to step outside of his comfort zone and created Dr. Strangelove. Maybe it was his directing genius, but somehow Dr Strangelove works as a comedy. Despite being completely mind boggling, it is just amazing how much you could enjoy this creature of a movie.
3. Blues Brothers – 1980
Would “unbelievably awesome” comedy be an overstatement? Quite the opposite. Set in our very own city of Chicago, two brothers try to save their beloved church orphanage by getting their old band back together. Along the way they encounter Nazis, killer ex-girlfriends, and the entire Chicago police department on their trail. With their signature suits and sunglasses and their famous line, they’ll never get caught; they’re on a mission from God.

2. The Big Lebowski – 1990
Coen brothers and comedy, do you need more? The Coen brothers ingeniously capture the comedic aspects of, plainly put, bums. Jeff Bridges plays his most famous role as The Dude, a happy-go-lucky unemployed bowler, who makes us laugh without trying. Basically, the Dude gets mixed up in the kidnapping of the wife of a powerful man who has the same name as him: Jefferey Lebowski. Witty lines, a hilarious story, The Big Lebowski always makes me happy.

1. Modern Times – 1938
Although it is a silent film, Modern Times never fails to make me laugh every single time I watch it. Charlie Chaplin’s classic film depicts “The Little Tramp” as he tries to make a living during the Great Depression while also trying to help out the girl of his dreams. The fact that it is in black and white should not be a factor in how funny it is; old does not mean worse, and new does not mean better. The truth is that it can get anyone to laugh uncontrollably. A sweet and fun movie, Modern Times is without a doubt the funniest movie of all time.

I think the number one spot deserves to be any of the classic Cheech and Chong movies. Regardless of the subject matter…

To be honest, I’ve never heard of half of those movies…

Also, you should add The Producers (remake from 2006) to the list. It’s hilarious and has really memorable songs.
