2011 Boys Varsity Volleyball Preview

[singlepic id=1766 w=320 h=240 float=left]The NWN sat down with varsity head coach Andrew Roche about this year’s Boys Volleyball team.

NWN: How is the team looking this year?

Roche: We have a lot of potential but at the same time we have a lot of work ahead of us. We are an undersized team (height wise) but hopefully our athleticism will make up for it.

NWN: How do you think the team will preform this year?

Roche: My expectation for the season is always to get as many wins as we can. Our goal is to meet or break the 20-win mark, but in such a tough conference, I think we can get to about .500.

NWN: You talked about a tough schedule, what will be the team’s most challenging game?

Roche: We’ve already played Vernon Hills who at the time was ranked sixth in state, we play New Trier twice this season and they are ranked fifth in state, we play GBS and they are ranked in the top ten, and we will probably play other top ten teams throughout the season, so take your pick on which game will be the most challenging.

NWN: Who are going to be key contributors to the team this season?

Roche: Patrick O’Connor he is the setter on the team, Patrick Cristi is our defensive specialist, and then there’s Arben Cuca he is our main offensive weapon.

NWN: what should everyone know about the team?

Roche: they are a good group, they are good hardworking kids, and they are very exciting and alot of fun to watch.

NWN: What are some strengths and weaknesses of the team?

Roche: We are always a great defensive team, the team has alot of character, and they are just a really good group of kids, our size is a disadvantage, and most of our kids don’t play club Volleyball during the offseason, so they don’t play as much as kids from other schools.

NWN: This is your second year as head coach, how do you like it?

Roche: Overall, I like it a lot. You get to work with players who have more ability which allows you to do more things, be more creative offensively and defensively. It also makes thing more competitive.

NWN: What teams are you looking forward to playing this season?

Roche: I always look forward to playing Maine South, my old high school. We also seem to always have epic games against Evanston. And, of course, the North game. I always tell my players to just play that one like they’re playing any other team to take the pressure of the North vs. West rivalry off them.

NWN:  You coach both boys and girls, which is your favorite?

Roche: Now it’s boys. When I was JV for the boys team though it was definitely the girls. They listen better and it’s a lot easier to coach.
