Joshua Bassett Creates Waves With Lie Lie Lie

Though fairly new to the music world, Joshua Bassett has made some waves with his newest single titled “Lie Lie Lie.” This release follows the success of his original songs included in the “High School Musical The Musical The Series” soundtrack, and his two singles released in 2020.

If you’ve been on any form of social media in the last two weeks, you’ve listened to Olivia Rodrigo‘s song “drivers license,” and heard all of the drama and rumors that have circulated around it as well. Many have speculated that Rodrigo’s song is about Bassett, and the rumor mill has been working overtime to figure out just what happened between the two. Bassett released his single “Lie Lie Lie,” just 6 days after Rodrigo dropped her smash hit, causing fans to descend even deeper into the rabbit hole of rumors and gossip that surround the two young adults.

The song itself is great. This is Bassett’s third single, and he continues to showcase his immense talent when it comes to music. The song is seemingly about a breakup with a significant other, who continues to talk about Bassett and say things about him that are untrue, hence the name “Lie Lie Lie.” The lyrics follow that same sort of story, of a breakup gone awry and one party spewing fallacies about what actually occurred during the relationship.

The young popstar reminds me a lot of Shawn Mendes. The two artists have the same sort of sound and even lyrical choices. In particular, “Lie Lie Lie,” reminds me a lot of Mendes’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” From the lyrics both being focused on a significant other who is lying to both Mendes and Bassett in their respective cases, to the beat itself. Both songs have a multitude of instruments in the background, that increase in volume during the chorus. The two most prominent to me in both cases are the acoustic guitar and drums. These two instruments are very loud and intense in the chorus and seem to dwindle during each verse, which makes for a great beat.

Though we don’t know if Bassett’s single is about Rodrigo or vice versa, I think we can thank the two for releasing two great breakup anthems for anyone to indulge in. I’d rate Bassett’s single an 8/10 and would recommend it to anyone whos a fan of pop music, or an active consumer of Tik Tok gossip.
