Bling Empire takes on New York

Jan 31, 2023

If you’re unfamiliar with the Bling Empire, it is a reality show that follows wildly wealthy Asian and Asian-American who love partying, fashion, drama, and glamour. The original show is set in Los Angeles, but this show is a spin-off with one of the cast members, Dorothy Wang.

Unlike Los Angeles where Wang has all her friends, Wang is completely new to New York and doesn’t know many people except for her friend, Tina Leung, who is portrayed as the fashion it-girl and influencer. Given that Wang only knows one person in New York, Leung invites her out to meet some of her friends; however, things take a turn.

In the first episode, Wang has been invited out to one of Leung’s friends’ parties. Even though Wang has never met the hosts of the party, Stephen Hung and Deborah Hung, she arrives late which causes tension between the hosts and her. Watching this episode, I couldn’t really believe what I was hearing. Upon arriving late, Wang immediately started complaining about the party. She couldn’t believe there weren’t any servers to take her coat or food being passed out. Although Wang does have a point about there being no food, the party was held at a gallery, so it makes sense as to why the hosts wouldn’t want food around. Furthermore, I thought it was very disrespectful how Wang didn’t even introduce herself to the hosts or thank them for letting her, given they had every right to not invite her since they didn’t know her. I also thought Wang shouldn’t have shaded the hosts through social media; instead, she should’ve just kept the comments to herself.

Throughout the series, the tension between the Hungs and Wang arose. Although Deborah Hung was still mad at Wang, she still tried to be mature and settle this conflict between them; however, Wang’s pride had different plans. At one of their mutual friend’s party, Richard Chang, Chang tried to bring the two together in order to squash the tension; however, Wang wouldn’t get up from her seat to speak to them, and she ignored them.

Although I loved the original Bling Empire, the New York one really didn’t feel as luxurious as the LA one. Both are filled with drama, but the New York one is just very bland and boring. The feud between Wang and the Hungs is very drawn out and repetitive. Furthermore, this one didn’t have as many luxurious parties going on, which was a shame for viewers like me who wanted to see the extravagance of their lifestyles.

Overall, I would give this show a 6/10 because it was kind of boring, and I had high hopes for it considering it’s centered in New York. I would recommend this show if you’re just looking to pass time or just want to keep up with Wang’s life.
