Mar 22, 2023

With the spring sports taking action, varsity softball took home their first win against the Highland Park Warriors on Thursday, March 16. At the start of the game, the Wolves took an early lead with 1-0. The Wolves held a strong defense on the field and had a strong offense with great hits. The final score was 3-0, Wolves taking home the win.

This was the Wolves opening game and all the players were hyped. Their energy was high, even for it being cold and rainy. Christina Rosin, head coach for the varsity softball team is proud of the team so far.

“It was our first time being outside this season so I think overall we had a really good game with a solid defense and no errors, so that was a good way to start off our season. Offensively it’s always hard to hit when it’s cold out, but we managed to produce three runs so that was great to see,” Rosin said.

The three captains on the team, Maggie Burns, Mariko Ishii and Evie Modena are all seniors. Since it was their first home game, there are some things they would like to improve on, but so far they are off to a great start.

“‘It was a really good team effort and it was really fun to play with new girls that I’ve never played with before. We have made chemistry together on and off the field,” Burns said.

“I think we had a solid first home game. It wasn’t too bad but their room for improvement, but we overall did really well,” Ishii said.

“Some things we need to improve on are adjusting our hitting a little quicker, but I feel like we have a good team bond,” Modena said.

For some girls, this was their first game for softball at Niles West. Ava Hortega, a freshman, was the starting catcher for their first home game. This was her first softball game for Niles West. She was excited, but she did have some nerves.

“At first I was really nervous because it was my first game on varsity and my first game playing in high school. I was also really excited because I knew we were going to do well with all of the practices we had so far. I’m really excited for the rest of the season and to make memories with my new teammates,” Hortega said.
