The boys volleyball team lost against Glenbrook South on April 6, with a score of 33 to 31 in first set and 25 to 23 in the second.
Even though the team lost, head coach Zachery Sinn believed that the team still played very well during the match.
“I told the team afterwards, I was not really disappointed in how we played, just frustrated with the results,” Sinn said. “Ultimately, they did some things very well.”
Sinn elaborated on what he thought the team did well on, stating that he was proud of how the team took feedback well and their ability to apply it during the game.
“[The team] did a nice job implementing some adjustments in the match,” Sinn said. “We called timeouts, we talked, and we said, ‘Hey this isn’t working, you should do this.’ I told my middles to try and run a back one, which they did and it worked. It was cool seeing them take that feedback and apply it.”
Senior outside hitter George Hurducas mirrored Sinn’s sentiment. He also believed the team played very well during this match, even with the loss.
“As a team, I think it was a great match,” Hurducas said. “We played very well and Glenbrook South played very well. The score was very close, and overall it was a very good game.”
While Hurducas had positive statements about the match, he also felt that there are also aspects that the team could work on. Specifically, he thought that the team lacked energy, which gave them a disadvantage against Glenbrook South.
“I think as a team, we didn’t have enough energy. Glenbrook South beat us with their energy,” Hurducas said.
Hurducas was not the only member of the team who had some pointers for the team. Junior middle hitter Alex Ciubuca believes that they need work on passing the ball to one another and communication.
“Passing the ball has been a weakness of the team and we are trying to improve this as quick as possible so that we can get perfect sets and be able to score points on the opposing team,” Ciubua said. “We are also looking forward to improving on communication either between setter and hitter or communicating the seams when we are on service receive.”
Sinn also feels that the team needs to work on communication and their bond as a group. He believes that because the group is newer, they need to focus on building their chemistry.
“I think the big thing with our team is that we need to keep focusing on team chemistry,” Sinn said. “We don’t have a lot of experience playing together yet. So I think as we get more reps, as we get further into the season, then it’ll get better and hopefully we will close out some of those sets.”
Even though they lost this game, the team is excited to apply what they have learned in future games.
