Thundercat came out with a new album titled “Distracted” on April 3rd, and the album was exactly what I expected in the best way possible.
I have listened to a lot of the music Thundercat has released in the past, and I’ve always found it to be a very calm, enjoyable experience. This album was another amazing example of that, and did not disappoint at all. While I don’t think this album will be for everyone, those who enjoy Thundercat’s calming tones and beats will love this album.
One thing about the album I really enjoy is that all the songs have a very similar vibe. They are differentiated enough to feel coherent, but not like the whole album consists of the same song over and over again. I’ve noticed with artists who make similar music that when listening to their albums all their songs can blend together. This takes away from an album because it leaves the listener bored, and probably not even motivated to get through the whole album. “Distracted” does a great job at capturing the listeners’ attention, and has enough differentiation to give each song their own identity.
Another aspect I really liked about this album is how the people featured on the album were very well thought out and complimented Thundercat’s voice beautifully. The features on this album were Tame Impala, Mac Miller, Lil Yachty, Flying Lotus, A$AP Rocky, The Lemon Twigs, Channel Tres, and WILLOW. All the artists made a wonderful addition to the song they were on. dThree of my favorite songs that feature other artists were “I Did This To Myself” featuring Lil Yachty and Flying Lotus, “She Knows Too Much” featuring Mac Miller and “Funny Friends” featuring A$AP Rocky. These songs stood out to me the most because I feel all the artists rap really elevated Thundercat’s singing and gave more life to those songs. All of their rapping styles really just fit into the song, and felt like a natural fit. This is such a relief because sometimes when artists, especially those who have a music style like Thundercat, feature rappers on their albums, they can end up feeling very out of place and just overall not fitting the vibe of the song.
I think anyone who likes jazz, pop, or just feel good music should give this album a chance. While might not be for everyone, those who do will resonate with it and probably enjoy the rest of his catalog, due to the way he experiments with vocals and sounds in his songs. The album can be streamed on Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube Music.
