Sombr released his new single “Potential” on April 17. He performed it for the first time at the 2026 Coachella Festival, which took place on April 11. The song can be streamed on services such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music, among others.
The synth-pop genre suits Sombr’s voice as a tenor and evokes a sense of longing. According to Genius, the song revolves around his feelings towards a past relationship, where he feels like it should not have ended. I can feel the message that he is trying to convey of yearning for someone you can’t have based on his pre-chorus lyrics: “There’ll be someone new for you, baby, I’m not worried ’bout you (Oh), I’ll be somewhere going crazy, I’ll be stuck on you (Woo).” I think that it is a nice buildup to the chorus. It’s a type of catchy pop-rock that gets stuck on your head.
The chorus further brings out his emotional state of yearning for someone. In the song “Potential,” I felt as if I could understand him. I love the instrumentals and he has a signature sound that exudes the retro vibe. With each new release, the aesthetics of his musicality become clearer. For me, I can see his growth as an artist.
However, I like the previous single “Homewrecker” more compared to his current song. There is something about the rawness of his emotion that struck me. “Potential” leans to its shimmering synths and vocal layers that create a polished result. “Homewrecker,” however, felt messy in an artistically beautiful way. I feel his vulnerability, which resonates with me. The contrast between the two songs shows how he is exploring his artistry with music; sometimes, the media overshadows his creative visions.
In the lyrics of “Potential,” Sombr is more reflective rather than confrontational about his feelings. He isn’t blaming anyone but rather sitting on the idea of what could have been. The sense of unresolved possibility is relatable, which is why I think that it is a good song. The repetition of the chorus reinforces that feeling, like he isn’t able to move on because of the potential that he had with his past relationship. I think some of the lines don’t hit as he wants the listeners to feel. If he describes more scenarios of his experience rather than impersonating the emotion, I think it would be more impactful. I had to listen to the song multiple times for it to grow on me, since there was no visual representation in my head for me to understand why he was feeling that way.
That being said, “Potential” is a song that evolves Sombr’s artistic identity to something better. His voice has a distinct, yearning quality that feels deeply personal to the listeners. If you want a nostalgic heavy synth song, then I think this is can be put into your playlist.
