The infamous “Met Monday” aired on the official Vogue Livestream on May 4 at 2 p.m. One day a year, the fashion industry assembles to throw the most iconic looks together and display them on the carpet. With this year’s theme being “Fashion Is Art,” many of the iconic looks were based on different famous art pieces. Some celebrities took the theme literally and chose art pieces as their muse; some celebrities went their own way, interpreting the theme differently. These are some of the best looks from this years MET gala.
1. Emma Chamberlain in Mugler
Chamberlain captured this year’s theme perfectly, The exquisite custom dress made by Mugler is everything that I envisioned when I saw this year’s theme. When planning her outfit for this year’s Met, she based her dress off of different works by Vincent Van Gogh and Edvard Munch. These artists have inspired the art industry for years. Chamberlain taking these inspirational artists and channeling them into her dress captures the theme beautifully.
2. Doechii in Marc Jacobs
Doechii perfected this year’s theme in a Marc Jacobs wrap dress. She took the route of not using an artist as her muse but her own body as her muse. This outfit clearly captures the beauty of the body her body is art. She took this statement even further by wearing no shoes. She stated that she wanted to feel “grounded.”
3.Anok Yai in Balenciaga

Yai wore a stunning Balenciaga dress with prosthetic hair and glowy, gold makeup. She carried out the theme “Fashion is Art” by referencing the Black Madonna, a figure often found in European religious art. The simplicity of this beautiful black dress is what makes the outfit. The gold makeup is perfectly complemented by the dress and captures the beauty of the Black Madonna.
4. Madonna in Saint Laurent
Madonna based her look on Leonora Carrington’s oil painting, “The Temptations of St. Anthony”. The reference to this painting was beautifully done, capturing the gothic and dreamlike look of the painting that sits perfectly under the theme. Very clearly following the theme, Madonna translated art into fashion and dropped it onto the carpet.
This year’s MET Gala satisfied many with different outfits varying from extravagant to simple. Artists wait for next year’s MET to either redeem themselves or top off last year’s look.
