Mean Girls: Was It Really Fetch?

Mean+Girls+cast+
Mean Girls cast

You might have forgotten the popular teen comedy Mean Girls starring Lindsay Lohan, which went through the high school experience, the power of friendship, and how words can affect someone. However, this year we were all reminded when the new Mean Girls was released this time being a musical. If ur a musical fan, or a fan of popular actor Christopher Briney who plays Aaron Samuels, this is the movie for you. Although it is a musical with lots of singing and dancing it is the same storyline as the original Mean Girls released in 2014.

This movie starts just like the original with Cady Heron and how she is making the big switch from being homeschooled and living in Africa to going to public high school. She sees how different it is, how the kids act and how strict the teachers are. The first day she is lost and has no one to talk to or guide her through the school. She notices how differently people act by who they hang out with, which is when she meets her two friends Damian and Janis who immediately become her friends. They guided her through the different cliques and how to survive high school.

When Cady gets noticed by the “plastics” the three most popular girls in school Regine George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Shetty. She is immediately invited to sit with them at lunch for the rest of the week. Regina sang a song introducing herself which was my favorite song that was sung. It was the only song that got stuck in your head and wasn’t too flashy or irritating. Janis, who hates the plastics has the idea for Cady to pretend to like them and spy on them for that week. Cady has to learn all their rules and how to act like the plastics. My favorite scene was when they all go to Reginas’ house, her room is bright and colorful, and what I would want my room to look like. All starts to go wrong when Cady starts to like Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels. Gretchen finds out and promises not to tell Regina.  The rest of the movie is Cady doing things to sabotage Regina so she is no longer the most liked girl in the school. She turns everyone against her, ruins how she looks, and breaks her and Aaron up. At this point in the movie, Cady is no longer friends with Janis and Damian because she became one of the plastics and was no longer a good friend to them. At the “Spring Fling,” Cady is voted as the queen and there she apologizes, takes the plastic crown she was awarded, and breaks it up into smaller pieces to give to all the girls. In the end, Cady makes up with Janis and Damian for being a bad friend and turning into someone she isn’t. The dance wasn’t my favorite scene, it was very short and the part where Cady apologizes was very rushed. Cady didn’t take time to talk about everyone or give a sincere apology like she did in the original movie.

Overall, the new Mean Girls is the same as the original movie it has the same plot which was very predictable and made it hard to sit through if u had already seen the original. The actress who played the new Cady was very irritating and just wasn’t a good fit for that role. Throughout the movie, it would go from singing and dancing to stopping mid-sentence which was annoying. Although the new version was a musical, the songs that were played would go from slow to a whole new song and would be upbeat with lots of dancing. Damian was the only character who was funny and had a good sense of humor. In the original movie, Karen is portrayed as the dumb friend but, isn’t completely clueless. In the new movie, they made her seem too oblivious to everything.  This being said I would rate this movie a 5/10.
