On Christmas Day, “Marty Supreme” was released into movie theaters everywhere. The movie is produced and led by Timothée Chalamet, who plays the main character, Marty Mauser. This movie had been hyped up for a while because of Chalamet’s many promotions, such as his rap with Esdeekid, his blimp and the production of his signature “Marty Supreme” jackets that celebrities and athletes have been wearing months prior and after the theatrical release.
The cast contains Odessa A’zion who plays Marty Mauser’s main love interest, Rachel Mizler. They have a very complicated relationship for most of the movie, with him not having time for her as he chases his dreams of being the world’s best pingpong player. She turns out to be pregnant with his child in the movie, which Mauser wants nothing to do with. Tyler, the Creator is also in the movie as Wally who is Marty’s best friend. His character and Mauser are similar yet very different. Wally is more responsible and content with his life, while Mauser is very prideful and constantly chasing more.
Mauser is a complex character and his main motive of the movie was to get to Japan after he was defeated by Koto Endo (played by Koto Kawaguchi), a pingpong player in real life as well. He loses to him at the tournament at the beginning of the movie and makes it his mission to go to Japan so he can play against Endo again in the Olympics and beat him.
I found myself constantly rooting for Mauser even though he made very poor choices the whole film. The movie always had a new plot line going on, which made it really interesting and easy to get into. Mauser was constantly making deals or getting himself into deeper trouble throughout the film just so he could make it to Japan. He gets himself into a deal with Milton Rockwell (played by Kevin O’Leary) so that he can be flown out to Japan. There’s also a side plot with Mauser and Rockwell’s wife and actress Kay Stone (played by Gwyneth Paltrow). She cheats on her husband with Mauser multiple times in the picture.
At the end of the movie Mauser ends up going back on his deal and returns home once finding out he’s banned from playing in the Olympics because of his poor choices. He comes back to Rachel and his child who was just born.
What I was surprised about is that by the end of the movie Mauser was let go consequent-free from all of his actions, and it was really interesting to have a protagonist portrayed in not the best light but still being so charismatic that you wanted him to win. I think Chalamet did an excellent job portraying a complex character like Mauser.
I think that out of all the films released in 2025, “Marty Supreme” really shines through because it is so creative and original. I thought it was just going to be a pingpong movie, but instead it turned out to be a full blown action movie with so many twists. This movie was really out of the box and was really refreshing to watch.
I would rate “Marty Supreme” 5/5 because of its creativity and ability to captivate audiences throughout the two and a half hour showtime.
